Průhonice is a small town just south of the city's boundaries. It is easily reached by catching Metro line C southwards to Opatov, the penultimate station. From there, there are regular buses, at least three an hour to Průhonice town centre that take about 12 minutes.
So close is the bus stop to the pub that should you be unfortunate enough to trip over as you were alighting, your head would land in the porch! Apart from the pub the town has other attractions including a finely restored castle and also Botanical Gardens.
On this particular Tuesday, which was a public holiday and a fine sunny day, we had to dismiss the first bus from Opatov as it was alsolutely full and standing with tourists getting away from the city. It was so late leaving that the next one was just behind.
The brewery itself was established in 1995 by the Bernard brewery of Humpolec and I can remember when I first visited in 1996 they had both house-brewed beers and also those of the parent.
It is now owned by a small independent catering company that also owns the nearby Pizza Coloseum. The pub has a small beer garden and is also a pension, so it possible to stay there.
Having made it through the door without falling over, it was time for beer. Even though it was just 11.15 in the morning we were offered a food menu which was declined. There was no problem just having a beer. The main room is staunchly tradition with wood-panelled walls and the brewery standing proudly at one end.
There was a choice of three beers: Sládkova polotmavá 13% (an unfiltered and unpasteurized half-dark lager), Pšeničně světlé 13% (an unfiltered top-fermented Bavarian-style wheat beer), Bezouškovské Desítka 10% (also unfiltered and unpasteurized, a light session lager).
We, that's myself and Russell, my drinking companion that day, tried both the light and half-dark beers, passing on the wheat beer. They were both very good indeed with the half-dark (we'd call it a brown) standing out.
I understand that they also do a 13% Pale lager, but regrettably it wasn't available on this day. Other draught beers sold are Pilsener Urquell light and Velkopopovický Kozel light and dark.
This is a great pub and well worth the one hour journey from the city centre.
